HEAT SINKS / FINS / EXTRUSIONS
A good way to keep electronic components cool is to add a heat sink. Heat sinks are usually made by extrusion. Heat sinks can be broken up into two categories; active and passive. Active heat sinks have fans attatched to help improve cooling. Passive heat sinks are designed to operate without a fan attached. |
These companies all manufacture passive heat sinks: Advanced Thermal Solutions, Du-all Thermo, ERM,
The Metals Group Inc. R-Theta.
Here are some companies that manufacture both active and passive heat sinks: Chip Coolers, iREC, PSC, Wakefield.
These companies also manufacture heat sinks: Cambio International, ThermFlo, and YTS.

THERMAL INTERFACES
To get good thermal conductivity between two surfaces, such as a heat sink and a processor, you need thermally conductive material. This usually is in the form of tape, epoxy, or grease. Tape and epoxy have the added advantage of being able to hold the heat sink in place. Grease is not an adhesive of any kind, therefore the heatsink needs to be mechanically held in place. |
3M
and Raychem are two companies which manufacture thermal tape.
Thermalloy and Thermoset are some companies that manufactures thermal grease. Thermal grease is usually placed between heat sinks and electrical components to improve the thermal path between them.
Thermal tape and thermal grease can also be bought from Bergquist, Chomerics, Power Device,
and Thermagon
Furon has a complete line of thermal interface materials. check out their website for an explanation of why thermal interfaces are important.
